What is Situationism? Book

by Stuart Home

The Situationists are an international political and artistic movement, originated in the Italian village of Cosio d'Arroscia on 28 July 1957 with the fusion of several extremely small artistic tendencies: the Lettrist International, the International movement for an imaginist Bauhaus, Guy Deboard, and the London Psychogeographical Association. Now it's become again imminsely popular, thanks to the work of the movie Fight Club, punk rock music, and Crimethinc, who often market situationism as anarchism. Situationists construct a situation to prove a point and show their feelings on a subject; for example a group dancing in the middle of a busy intersection is a metaphor for people reclaming public spaces. This book attempts to explain situationism and its roots from long before it was popular and re-introduced to the radical world at large. Read a Crimethinc article about the situationists.
