Shelter: A Squatumentary
by Hannah Potassium
A look at 3 squats from the Berkeley/Oakland area, and their eventual demises. Hannah states in the liner notes that she didn't want this to be a documentary about privileged young people taking advantage of opportunities. She also concedes that that's exactly what it ended up being about. But that hopefully this will illuminate what the folks squatting did right, what they could do better, and encourage squatters to form a more cohesive movement. As someone who has never squatted, I found it pretty entertaining. "What comes shining through is that these are not shabby miscreants, societal dregs, or diseased rodent people, but intelligent, idealistic folks who are brave enough to buck the system and live by their own rules. And I admire the stinking hell out of that." --Aphid Peewit, *Razorcake* website: http://www.killnormal.com/shelter trailer: http://www.killnormal.com/shelter/shelter_trailer.avi
