Email is Meaner: User Dynamics on Email Lists: Problems and Solutions

by Katja Author

Katja turned her thesis about email lists into a series of zines. She conducted a study of people who use email lists for activism and figured out what works for them and what doesn't. This is zine #2 of the series. Inside are discussions about and solutions for: posting too many messages, domination of the list by a few people, men participating more than women, lack of sharing computer skills, selective communication, arguing on email lists, compounding of hostilities and insufficient information, promotion of group goals that reinforce negative societal values, perceptions of groups as tight-knit, and communicating with anonymous others.
