Paper Birds: Styrofoam Flowers
by christopher arendt
Paper Birds: Styrofoam Flowers is a zine Chris wrote about his time as a soldier in the US military. He writes seemingly with regret and sympathy about his time spent as an enlisted person. (The back of this zine loudly proclaims "Iraq Veterans Against the War") Chris enlisted in Michigan, and was stationed in Guantanamo Bay. He witnessed people being tortured, sprayed with pepper spray in the face. He watched people be subjugated to loud music in tiny rooms for hours on end. He calls attention to the nuance in language between "detainee" and "prisoner," and what that means; what that allows the military to do to people. This zine is a firsthand account of what happened during Chris's time in Guantanamo Bay.
