Nine Gallons

Susie Cagle made a series of autobiographical comics about volunteering at Food Not Bombs, an organization that provides free food on a weekly basis. Her comics give an accurate portrayal of the dynamics that are present in many Food Not Bombs chapters. The struggle over being overtly political. The uncertainty surrounding how much help you're actually providing. The weird social interactions between long-timers and new-comers. Like any volunteer-based organization, it's complicated, but totally worth it. And Susie draws it all with a good sense of humor, even if she does sometimes have nightmares about chopping carrots.
