Sugar Needle #34

Sugar Needle #34

by Cathy Camper

Phlox and Corina have done their best to compile reviews of non-animal product-filled (almost) vegan candies! First up are German Seitenbacher gummy candies, which come in varieties such as apple lions, and grapefruit parrots. Next up are Cairn pops and cocoa deli Belgian chocolate caramel crunch truffle popsicles. Melissa Berry gets interviewed about her awesome-sounding business: Missionary Chocolates. They specialize in vegan truffles, which sound amazing! Corina also reviews a bunch of cool candies from Finland, and Phlox eats a booger-themed candy.

“This issue (of what is perhaps the longest running zine about candy) bills itself as ‘The (Almost) Vegan Issue,’ which immediately aroused my suspicion, as I think veganism is dumb. But then I read the intro and realized that Corina has been recently stricken with a medical condition that restricts her diet in a ton of different ways. As she puts it, it’s ‘detrimental to her candy career.’ I can’t imagine being in that situation. Seriously. I’m a candy fiend. So I hope she manages to get cured, so she can get back to doing what she does best—eating candy! Still, she manages to find a good bunch of candy to review, including Candy Strangers (I think it has some of the best packaging of any candy I’ve ever seen), Box of Boogers, and even an assortment of Finnish candy! This is a quick read, but it’s really what more zines should aim for—a ridiculously specific topic that you really can’t find anywhere else. Yay!”
