Shortandqueer #4: The Coming Out Issue

Shortandqueer #4 is about Kelly coming out as a boy to his friends and family. Kelly's mom had a particularly hard time with the transition, and felt particularly lost when it came to pronouns. Kelly and his mom emailed back and forth discussing the changes Kelly was going through, and those emails are reprinted here in full. Kelly's dad had an even harder time when Kelly came out as trans, not quite knowing what to say, and processing very slowly. Kelly was given overwhelming support too. His mom joined PFLAG and trans messageboards, and even went with him to a Trans-Health conference in Philly. And a 4 year old girl named Wylder was one of his best allies, piping up to correct any misused pronouns. Kelly also talks in this issue about accepting body hair, and about why he stopped working at the summer camp he'd gone to for 15 years.
