East Village Inky #46
Issue 46 of the East Village Inky is Ayun's gnome issue! “Wait, whaaat,” you (might) say? Yes indeed, ish 46 shows the Zinester's Guide to NYC author taking her turn as gnome-host as part of a Facebook group that has gnome-napped an Ohio family's tall-hatted garden statue and (as a very active form of mail art) sends the gnome to various group members who take it on photographic tours of their various home-cities, abodes, scenes, villages, whatevs, etc. The photos then go back to the Ohio family (as will the gnome someday) as proof of their little man's new life of high adventure. Ayun, being of course the ultimate hound of NYC fun, takes Nerman the gnome on a wild and breathless tour of New York City, documented here in photos, writing, and drawings. Yet even if you have gnomophobia (fear of gnomes; not recognized by the American Psychological Association) this issue of Ayun's zine is a great underground tour of cool stuff you should check out in the Big Apple. From the storied WFMU record fair to dark and dingy (and delicious!) eateries, Ayun once again explores an NYC underbelly that is enticing, scary, and oft-times fantastically funny (wait 'til you get to the Post-its section. ... hee-larious!). Other bonus mini-features include a comic strip staring Xtra Tuf's Moe Bowstern, Greg Kotis' “Advice to the Fathers” comic centerspread, and multiple references to deer skulls. Fun-times incarnate!
