Yo Miss #5: A Graphic Look at High School

Yo Miss #5: A Graphic Look at High School

by Lisa Wilde

Lisa Wilde is an artist and sixteen-year teacher at Wildcat Academy, a second chance high school in Brooklyn. This serialized graphic novel features more antics and adorable moments from her students. The teachers have a meeting to discuss violations of student dress code and how breasts are distracting for the male students. The students talk about the racial discrimination arguments in Plessy vs. Ferguson. Ralphie's life is falling apart at home and he feels stared at when the city observes his teacher. He rushes to the bathroom to avoid punching the inspector. In the end he's worried that he screwed up the review for Wild and she recounts her own fantasy of beating up a classroom inspector. Natalie has a baby sixteen hours after delivering her English regents. The kids have their prom. There is no shortage of other narrative action. Television isn't scripted this well. The graphic novel format perfectly creates emotional proximity between the reader and the student. It's funny. It's hard to read at times. It's sad. It's uplifting. It's hopeful.
