The Subtweet: A Novel

by Vivek Shraya Author

This is the best novel I've read in years. Vivek Shraya weaves a page-turning web of friendship, food, music, and postcolonial theory. She set out to write a novel without cis men, without main characters who are white, and without romance—the main relationship is a friendship between two women musicians—and she pulls it off with perfect grace, masterfully handling questions of representation and authenticity, social media and call out culture, celebrity and authenticity. She lets all the complexities of her characters and the challenges they face shine through without ever offering easy answers, always with empathy for the imperfect humanity of all involved. It's perfectly paced and with a satisfying conclusion.
