Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell

Down and Out in Paris and London

by George Orwell Author

This is George Orwell's first full book. The first part is an account of his days starving in Paris and then working in the squalid kitchens of the finest restaurants of that city; the second part is an account of "tramping" in England, walking from place to place and staying in the prison-like "spikes" or working-houses for the poor. An eye-opening first-hand account of a time and place in which most of the romanticized accounts that we read and see today deal with the lives of the very rich. Brilliantly written and strongly prefigures Orwell's later, more famous works of fiction.
