Dedicated to the cause of racial equality from a young age, Anne Braden was an activist, journalist, and educator who worked to subvert and challenge Jim Crow and white supremacy. Charged with sedition during McCarthyism for her role in helping a Black couple purchase a home in a white neighborhood, Braden was a brazen proponent of a more just future, and never wavered in her commitment to making that future a reality.

“You’re part of a long chain of struggle that was here long before you were here and it’s gonna be here long after you’re gone and that gives life a meaning.” —Anne Braden, 1926–2003
