Cakewalk/Bets Are Off

A split zine! Except both sides are comics by Nate Powell! One side, Cakewalk, is written by Rachel Bormann, and the other is an illustrated version of a Pretty Girls Make Graves song called Bets Are Off. In Cakewalk, a young white girl named Sara dresses up as Aunt Jemima for Halloween, smearing coal on her face. She goes to school, fantasizing that her teachers and classmates will applaud her creativity, only to be reprimanded and sent to the office. In Bets Are Off, two teenagers take a bus and run away from home. Nate is a very talented illustrator, and author of the books Sounds of Your Name, and Swallow Me Whole.
