What I Did on My Summer Vacation
by Bonnie Johnson
Bonnie writes a five-part journal about her summer vacation through Mexico and The Caribbean. Each part is illustrated by a different artist. The wonderful thing about Bonnie's journal is that she doesn't just narrate her daily activities. Instead, she weaves in social commentary and political narrative. Of course, Bonnie isn't your average vacationer. As a volunteer for No More Deaths, she is well aware of the political realities of the U.S. border and those living south of it.
Bonnie colors the stories of her travel with facts and stories of those whose lands she traverses. Even crossing the border into Mexico leads into the story of Latin American immigrants facing deportation. Bonnie's zine reminds us that traveling doesn't have to be relegated to the realm of tourism. Instead, it can be a tool to educate ourselves so that we can fit that knowledge into our lives and our struggle for a better world. And yes, that better world includes such relaxing endeavors as watching a coastal lightning storm from a patio roof.
