Witch Ikon: Witchcraft in Art and Artifact
by Daniel Schulke Editor, Tom Allen Editor and Martin Duffy Contributor
The concept of witches is so alluring to some in part because it is a figure that is multifaceted and has perdured — dating before our “modern” eras, spanning back thousands of years. But even beyond the expanse in the historical timeline, the witch has been a symbol that compliments and contradicts many cultural values and practices — from aspects of deviance and divinity in sexuality, spirituality, and rules. This collection gathers a range of depictions of witches across history, creating a progression of different views on witches. These many full-color images are accompanied by scholarly essays explaining the themes and art found inside, as well as numerous photographs from private and museum collections of occult artifacts associated with witchcraft.
