Minding the Store: A Big Story About a Small Business
This nonfiction graphic novel tells the story of Fishs Eddy, an iconic New York City business. It started as an eclectic junk shop, run by a young couple who quickly realized there's a market for the vintage discarded dishware of hotels and restaurants, often emblazoned with those business's logos. Lots of quirky, only-in-NYC stuff happens as their business grows, at first run by their eccentric moms and later expanded into a no-less-eccentric dishware empire. Along the way they start a family, go on a lot of road trips looking for bulk classic ceramics, and realize they're witnessing firsthand the demise of US manufacturing. A poignant all-American story, a fascinating business case study, and so, so, soooo New York.
