I'm Just a Person

In 2012, Tig Notaro faced a series of devastating events: hospitalization for C-diff, her mother’s death, a breakup, and a breast cancer diagnosis. Despite this, she channeled her grief into comedy. Days after her diagnosis, she opened a set with the blunt statement, “Good evening. Hello. I have cancer. How are you? Hi, how are you? Is everybody having a good time? I have cancer.” The set went viral and became her sophomore album, Live, which sold a hundred thousand copies in six weeks and was nominated for a Grammy.

In this memoir, Notaro reflects on that challenging year when tragedy turned to absurdity and despair to joy. Combining her deadpan comedy with open-hearted vulnerability, she offers a moving and humorous look at her journey through darkness and back.
