Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman: Conservation Heroes of the American Heartland

There is a rift between the people who work in the environment, doing jobs like the titular Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman, and people who describe themselves as "environmentalists." Horn focuses on the lives of five people: case studies consisting of a Montana rancher, a Kansas farmer, a Mississippi riverman, a Louisiana shrimper, and a Gulf fisherman. The protagonists exhibit vision, tenacity, and leadership but run into constraints from government agencies, indifferent NGOs and powerful individuals. Nonetheless they build communities of stewardship that, whatever label they don't give it, are a force for environmentalism.
