The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice
by Scott Ellsworth Author
After the horrific events of the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921, there was an official investigation... but it was far from satisfying or just. In fact, most official records that shed light on the event, particularly government and police actions before, during, and after the fact, were destroyed. Scott Ellsworth applied his journalistic skills to try to get to the bottom of what actually happened, and his story is as much about the botched investigation and response as it is about the events themselves. He describes the massacre and looting, the subsequent fight for reparations, and efforts to locate and identify the bodies of those who died. Concise, well-written, and as gripping as any TV crime procedural, this is a helpful book as Tulsa and the US grapple with the effects of deep-seated racism.
