Maybe Dying Is Like Becoming A Butterfly

by Pimm van Hest Author and Lisa Brandenburg Illustrator

This book explores a philosophical conversation between a young child and grandfather about death.

Grandpa suggests a caterpillar might die if Christopher puts it in a jar. The child asks if Grandpa will die. Grandpa admits someday, but hopes not too soon. Grandpa admits no one knows what happens after death, but suggests some people think of heaven, rebirth, or nothing. They discuss the reasons for death (“part of life”), birth (“learning”), and feelings about dying.

An important picture book for children ages 5 and up, it allows children to express their questions and ideas about death. It includes an epilogue by grief therapist Rebecca Dabekaussen with tips on discussing this difficult subject with children.
