One Tree/Un árbol único
This bilingual book is a photographic and scientific ode to a beloved Costa Rican relic tree, the magnificent Ceiba pentandra in the town of Sabalito. The townspeople call it la ceiba, likely derived from a Taíno word for canoe wood. It’s a vital tree in centuries-old forests in Costa Rica, once almost completely forested (98% in the mid-twentieth century) but later suffering devastating deforestation (34% by 1980). The book discusses the tree’s historical and natural history, the ceiba species in general, and the science of the Costa Rican rainforest and its deforestation. She also touches on cultural traditions, legends, and folklore of forests and relict trees.
