The Making of Tomb Raider

Released in 1996 after eighteen months of hard work, the video game Tomb Raider became a success, celebrating Brit-Pop and Girl Power in the mid-nineties. This book recounts the team’s creation of the first two Tomb Raider games, then their departure in 1998. Protagonist Lara Croft brought class, comedy, and a James Bondian role to the game, conceived by Toby Gard and pitched to Paul Douglas. Despite being a gamble, the company’s belief in it led to huge success, except for Toby and Paul. This book delves into Lara’s creation and the reasons behind Toby Gard and Paul Douglas’s departure before the sequel.

Through eleven chapters of interviews, the book reveals the team’s involvement in creating the first two games, including levels, music, and Lara’s voices. It also introduces Winston the Butler, created by Joss Charmet.
