Lou Reed, a 28-year-old musician, quit the Velvet Underground in 1970 and moved to Long Island, New York, where he pursued poetry. After spending months in isolation, Reed publicly declared he would never play rock and roll again. He wrote verse and contributed his work to journals and small press publications. Although his retirement from music didn't last, Reed's passionate identification with the written word remained. This features poems, photographs, and ephemera from this era, provides a window into the life of one of the most singular and uncompromising voices in American popular culture.
