Mountain of Fire: The Eruption and Survivors of Mount St. Helens

This book is a narrative nonfiction story about the violent volcanic eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980. It recounts the lives of those who died, survived, and fought to warn others. For weeks, the ground around Mount St. Helens trembled, unlike any previous eruption. Legends spoke of violent fire, treacherous floods, and scorching heat, but this was unlike anything ever seen.

Washington’s governor, Dixie Lee Ray, understood the despair of people forced from their homes. She grappled with how and when to evacuate the area, hoping it would save lives from the eruption of Mount St. Helens. Scientists tried to decipher the mountain’s clues, but nothing could prepare them for the impending destruction. The dormant volcano erupted, boiling rock far below the surface.
