The Black Kids

by Christina Hammonds Reed Author

In Los Angeles, 1992, Ashley Bennet and her friends are living the charmed life when everything changes one afternoon in April, when four LAPD officers are acquitted after beating a black man named Rodney Kind half to death. As violent protests erupt through LA and the city burns, Ashley isn't just one of the girls any longer. She's one of the black kids. Still, Ashley tries to continue on as if life were normal, even as her sister gets dangerously involved in the riots, her family begins to crumble, and her best friends spread a rumor that could derail the entire future of another black kid in her class. As the world splinters around her, Ashley - and the rest of LA with her - is left to wonder who is the us and who is the them.
