Zen Beyond Mindfulness: Using Buddhist and Modern Psychology for Transformational Practice

This book presents a different, new approach to cultivating and keeping a Buddhist practice that blends mediation with more modern psychological concepts to support the religious concepts and mindfulness. The author contends that American Buddhists face two particular challenges—repressing psychological issues in search of enlightenment and overly relying on secularized forms of Buddhism (particularly found in mindfulness) that lose touch with the philosophy and ethics that make up the bedrock of the religion. The author Jules Shuzen Harris is a psychotherapist but also a Zen practitioner and teacher with decades of experience. He’ll go into how to overcome these two pitfalls through meditation but also through study of the religion—as well as psychology. He contends that though his approach, the reader will be able to get the best of both worlds--psychology and Buddhism .
