Hip Hop Wars: What We Talk About When We Talk About Hip Hop--and Why It Matters
This book is a look at the present state of the world of hip hop in the music industry of today, confronting many of the extant problems that the author describes as a crisis the genre and the community. It explores these many facets of problems, including promoting racial stereotypes to a degree that’s unrealistic and harmful, notably exploring the role that the genre has taken on in communicating race relations in the US. It makes a call for action for why the genre and discourse like this matters, exploring the impact and messages that hip-hop has historically carried in the United States. It is an art form that has been a vehicle to express feelings around lived realities that are often ignored and unappreciated outside of their commercialization and aesthetic.
