One Kiss or Two?: The Art and Science of Saying Hello

by Andy Scott Author

What's the first component of a first impression? Sure, there're nonverbal cues, but usually it starts with a greeting! Andy Scott alongside other researchers from different fields throw in their two cents to answer the million dollar question of why greeting someone seems simple but is also a complex ritual. Some of the ways we're used to greeting people might be closer to giving someone the middle finger. Likewise, ways in which people might engage with us at first might rub us the wrong way. By starting off on the wrong foot, sometimes a failed greeting can lead to more communication misunderstandings. That's not to say that cultural misunderstandings are only found in our "hellos" but that's usually where they tend to start. Visiting distant French family or friends? Will you greet with a handshake, one kiss or two? Three?! All the same don't worry too much -- the French laugh about it too.
