The Younger Futhark: Viking Age Runes An Illustrated Guide
This book explores the “alphabet” of Old Norse, more aptly called a futhark because those are the first letters, the collection of runes that made up the writing system of Viking Age Scandinavian people. As time progresses, historians uncover more and more runic inscriptions, testaments and writs of a time bygone that is preserved through these ancient symbols. This book explores the topic of the runes in a scholarly manner, though many illustrations and archival photographs. The Younger Futhark is the more “modern” versions of what is known as the Elder Futhark, and contains fewer runes. The book will go into why it has focused on the younger, as well as its pertinence in rebuilding our knowledge of what Scandinavian life was during the Viking Age.
