Tinderbox: The Untold Story of the Up Stairs Lounge Fire and the Rise of Gay Liberation

Tinderbox: The Untold Story of the Up Stairs Lounge Fire and the Rise of Gay Liberation by Robert W. Fieseler is an account of the 1973 Up Stairs Lounge fire in New Orleans, which killed 32 people and was the deadliest attack on the gay community in the U.S. until 2016. Drawing from survivor interviews and archival research, Fieseler tells the story of the hidden gay world that was devastated by fire and the prejudice that followed. Families disowned victims, religious institutions denied proper burial requests and the city largely ignored the tragedy. This became a turning point for gay rights activism in the South and has become an often overlooked but important chapter of civil rights.
