May Tomorrow Be Awake: On Poetry, Autism, and Our Neurodiverse Future

by Chris Martin Author

Memoir of an neurodiverse educator, Chris Martin shares his experiences, namely teaching poetry to help autistic students find their voices. The story isn’t simply a story about his students — it’s a call for us to consider how to be better communicators with neurodiverse people in our lives and in the world, exploring the natures of language and be able to move beyond linguistic ableism.

Oftentimes, autistic students all along the spectrum are labeled as having deficits with language and educators are themselves taught to try to “fix” these. Rather than fixing what isn’t broken, Martin takes these so-called deficits and reconceptualises them as poetic boons. A story of surpassing ablism and exploring potential — in people and language alike.
