After WWII, the Allies pledged to hunt Nazi war criminals worldwide, but many escaped or were shielded by the Western Allies in exchange for cooperation. Reinhard Gehlen, founder of West Germany's foreign intelligence service, welcomed SS operatives into the fold, which nearly led to the downfall of his service. Gehlen and his American sponsors also placed excessive importance on the supposed capabilities of former Nazi agents. Other Nazi fugitives became freelance arms traffickers, spies, and covert operators, playing a crucial role in the clandestine struggle between superpowers.
