Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America

This book as a unique look through history, looking at black culture in America, wealth, and fast food. Author Marcia Chatelain explores the role that fast food plays in the black community, even considering that fast food is something that is part and parcel of many American lives. It balances the realities of positives and negatives—from providing economic opportunities to bolstering obesity rates in the Black community. The author takes us on a historical journey from 1940s to the efforts of the civil rights era where fast food provided an avenue to entrepreneurship for many people, especially Black folks, as part of efforts to bolster economies—generating even billions of dollars. It exposes the parallels with health and exploitation of workers and wealth that was never returned to communities. This book won a Pulitzer Prize in history in 2021.
