Cult Following: My Escape & Return to the Children of God
This memoir is an accounting of a escapist of a cult, a survivor of the fanatics that was the Children of God — one of the most notorious cults documented. At the age of nine, she experienced her first exorcism. At age ten, she was forced to be silent for a whole year. And even then she recognized this as abnormal. By age fifteen, she escaped — leaving behind her parents and eleven siblings, still embedded in the cult. From documenting her life, she shares her trip across the Unites States infiltrating cults and living with among those who were forced to grow up in situations like hers. Along her journey she meets a myriad of people who run the gamut of outside the normal — monks, soap-making believers in the rapture, and eventually confronting her family coming back full circle.
