Carmilla

by J. Sheridan Le Fanu Author

This book was originally published in 1872 and stands as one of the earliest examples of vampire fiction, steeped the lifeblood of the classic gothic novella genre of the time. This book is short, and fast-paced, following the protagonist Laura. She lives in a secluded castle in the woods with her father; one day a mysterious woman arrives after going through a carriage accident in the forest. As the days go on, Laura finds herself increasingly attracted to this woman named Carmilla, while at the same time she recognizes a definite eerie vibe shift in the castle. As they get closer, Laura suspects Carmilla may not be who she seems to be.

This book is a prototypical vampire novel (predating Dracula) and also set the undertones and overtones for queer coding in the genre. The relationship between the the two central characters developed what would become the trope of the lesbian vampires.
