Voyage of the Deutschland

In 1916, Germany faced economic collapse due to a British blockade, leading to the creation of the Deutschland, a merchant U-boat. Paul Konig's account of its maiden voyage was a popular book in 1917. Although considered German propaganda, the story remains thrilling and has attracted readers for decades. The captain intended to make a joke of the blockade, but the Deutschland barely managed to evade British ASW. Dwight R. Messimer's introduction provides an informative overview of the U-boat's career.
