Haifa Republic: A Democratic Future for Israel: Beyond the Two-State Solution
This book argues that the two-state solution is no longer viable in Palestine. After fifty years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank, it constitutes annexation, while the Arab population’s legitimate claims remain unaddressed. Daily life under apartheid conditions continues. Liberals in Israel and America’s hope in a two-state solution is blind, especially as Israeli leaders speak of ethnic cleansing. A catastrophe is imminent.
However, Boehm offers hope. Catastrophe can be averted by reconfiguring Israel as a single binational state with equal citizenship for Palestinians and Jews. The original Zionists advocated such a federation, and Menachem Begin successfully submitted a similar plan to the Knesset. A binational federation offers a last chance for peace and mutual respect between the two peoples in Palestine, leading to a truly democratic future.
