This book lays out the adventures of Patrick Leigh Fermor’s epic foot journey across Europe, begun in A Time of Gifts, continues in Between the Woods and the Water. In 1933, he set out from Hungary to the Balkans with a daily allowance of one pound. The journey, undertaken during the onset of World War II, provided a backdrop for the unfolding events in Central Europe.The book begins with Fermor crossing the Danube, where his first volume left off. He detours to Prague and Budapest before crossing the Great Hungarian Plain on horseback. He enters Transylvania and savors remote castles, mountain villages, monasteries, and towering ranges inhabited by bears, wolves, eagles, gypsies, and various sects. As he approaches the Iron Gates, the division between the Carpathian mountains and the Balkans, the story closes.

The book contains an introduction by beloved trans writer Jan Morris.
