Window-Shopping Through the Iron Curtain
This is a collection of over 100 images of shop windows during four trips between 1986 and 1990 to various Communist countries. The images, captured using a Hasselblad camera, depict the slow, routine moments of daily life in these countries. The resulting images could be seen as still-lifes representing the intersection of Communist ideology and consumerist, capitalist tools. The shop windows were typically adorned with traditional yet incongruous symbols of cheer, such as homey lace curtains, paper flowers, painted butterflies, and pictures of happy children.
