Portland's Chinatowns
This book celebrates the history of Chinese Americans, notably in Portland Oregon in the 19th and 20th century. It highlights the importance that his community has historically held and expound on the legacy and importance they hold today. The book will outline the racism in the laws and attitudes that this group of Americans held during these time periods, their relocation that defined Chinatown and Japantown in the City of Roses. Through these pages, readers will follow a progression of their different roles in the workforce and in the city’s functioning such as restaurants, laundromats, agriculture in the city and surrounding areas. Readers will discover their civic engagement such as their roles in education, the military, and more—despite legislation that discriminated them.Through photographs, this mosaic of history will bloom in the imaginations of readers and especially PDX’ers—compiled and written by a fourth generation Chinese American Portlander.
