Unapologetic Expression: The Inside Story of the UK Jazz Explosion
This history of jazz engages the sociologic notion economic class married with art, experience and expression—a musical style and tradition with integral roots in the history of marginalized (Black) people that endured slavery and the very heart of imperialism and capitalism. As time progressed, jazz became something that wealthy people increasingly enjoyed in settings that divorced the roots of the music. This book notably explores the newer British musicians in the UK that have reclaimed this genre, for their own identities and the birthright belonging to their communities. Throughout this narrative, the reader will explore dynamics like gentrification, discrimination, as well as resilience and persistence, that have shaped a sound unique to musicians that sprung from the context of the United Kingdom. Inside are over 80 interviews of people at the forefront of this movement while also exploring the firebrands that made this resurgence possible.
