Seventeen years ago, Em and Sid’s young romance screeched to a halt when their best friend June turned up dead. Em accepted June’s death as a tragic accident, but Sid was laughed out of town for insisting that June was killed by the Normal Monster, a local cryptid rumored to resemble a giant cicada. Now, brash, freewheeling Sid has returned to Normal to produce a podcast about the monster. Sid wants to prove that monsters are real to the community that exiled her. Cautious, reserved Em wants Sid to leave town and stop wreaking havoc on her carefully curated life, which includes her truly wonderful boyfriend Charlie. But when another innocent child goes missing, Em and Sid are forced to confront their guilt over June’s death and their feelings for one another—before it’s too late.
