It's important not to have role models, because they always will disappoint you. But when they die young in their prime, it can be easier to hold them up as a bellwether of our times. Dennis Boon was the flamboyantly bouncy dancer, singer, songwriter, and guitar player of the Minutemen. In the early 80s, when punk was still finding its politics, Boon spoke loudly about the plight of El Salvador and envisioned what a movement of punks could do to shape the world.
