Christmas Traditions in Boston

Christmas was outlawed in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1659 due to views that considered it a season of excess lacking Biblical endorsement. This ban was lifted in 1681, but it wasn't until 1856 that Christmas Day was officially recognized as a state holiday. This details the city's Christmas observances, or the lack thereof, during the first 200 years post-settlement in 1630.
