Craft: An American History

by Glenn Adamson Author

This book presents the history of the US through its artisans — how they were integral to the nation and continue to be. The book takes us through a look at how the US’s economic and social development are liked to industry, commodities, and tech, but through the added layer of how this has affected craftspeople and makers throughout the years. The author explains how oftentimes craftspeople — such as Paul Revere — were engaged in the nation’s self definition and identity. Crafts and creation have been central to all people in the country, namely African Americans and Native Americans who worked to preserve their cultures and identities, despite second-class citizen status and social bondage under slavery and servitude. This book will show a diverse array of portraits of both those traditionally celebrated and those who have gone unnoticed.
