"Sleep paralysis (SP) experiences, although very common, are little known in American culture. This is because SP experiencers take the event to be a real spiritual experience, and in the modern view that conclusion would only be reached either by one with extremely strong religious beliefs or with poor education. Therefore, most SP experiencers do not discuss the event, making its prevalence seem much lower than it actually is. In her zine, Beyond the Nightmare, Sheila Pryce Brooks documents the great variety of experiences and interpretations that involve SP, and proceeds to offer a detailed framework within which SP could be organized and understood, including the fascinating concept of how SP could be elaborated as very positive within such a framework despite its terrifying nature."
