Minding the Store: A Big Story About a Small Business

by Julie Gaines Author and Ben Lenovitz Author

This nonfiction graphic novel tells the story of Fishs Eddy, an iconic New York City business. It started as an eclectic junk shop, run by a young couple who quickly realizes there's a market for the vintage discarded dishware of hotels and restaurants, often emblazoned with those business's logos. Lots of quirky, only-in-NYC stuff happens as their business grows, at first run by their eccentric moms and later expanded into a no-less-eccentric dishware empire. Along the way they start a family, go on a lot of roadtrips looking for bulk classic ceramics, and realize they're witnessing firsthand the demise of US manufacturing. A poignant all-American story and a fascinating business case study and so, so, soooo New York.
