The Whiteness of Wealth: How The Tax System Impoverishes Black Americans and How We Can Fix It
by Dorothy A. Brown Author
In this meticulously researched and eloquently written account, Dorothy A. Brown shows us the racist disparities in the American tax system and the disproportionate burden placed on Black families by this system. Growing up in the South Bronx, Brown became a tax lawyer to get away from race only to realize how deeply racism is embedded even in the way we pay our taxes. Today, the Black-white wealth gap continues to grow, in part as a function of the disparities in our tax system. Through historical analysis, Brown diagnoses our current ailments and offers multiple solutions for elected officials writing tax code to pursue. If we are to create a truly egalitarian tax system in this nation, we can only hope that they listen to her.
