You Are Beautiful and You Are Alone: The Biography of Nico

by Jennifer Otter Bickerdike Author

You Are Beautiful and You Are Alone is a biography of Nico, the cryptic singer from the Velvet Underground. Though her life was shrouded in myth, author Jennifer Bickerdike has carved out enough facts to make a convincing case for Nico's underrated importance in rock culture. Nico began her career as a model before she was discovered by Andy Warhol and cast in his film Chelsea Girls, and soon after joined the Velvet Underground. Though her beauty made her a star she struggled with addiction and mental health issues and died relatively young. Nico's influential body of work inspired subsequent artists including Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, Morrissey, and Siouxsie Sioux.
