Olimpiada Popular

In 1936, when the Olympics were held in Nazi Germany, Barcelona set about hosting the Olimpiada Popular, an explicitly antifascist alternative to the Olympics. Over 6,000 athletes arrived in Barcelona for the opening ceremonies, bringing with them more than 20,000 spectators. Sadly, the day before the opening ceremonies, the Spanish military coup began and the country descended into civil war. Nonetheless, we can remember the spirit of antifascism represented by the Olimpiada Popular, and celebrate its legacy with this poster!
